Test utilization and patient blood management are two of the last untapped areas of cost and risk in US health systems. Billions of dollars are spent every year on unnecessary lab testing. Blood acquisition is the highest single procurement cost in the lab while 20–30% of all blood transfusions are unnecessary and avoidable. Anemia frequently goes untreated, leaving surgery patients at risk for complications and increased length of stay.
However, many health systems lack the data and tools to identify all of these risks and the playbooks and expertise to implement change.
